El hervidero san agustin de guadalix

El villar reservoir

In this circular hiking route suitable for everyone we walk to the Cascadas del Hervidero, beautiful waterfalls of crystalline water between siliceous rock formed by the waters of the Guadalix River. We also enjoy the historic town of San Agustin del Guadalix and a path along the banks of the Guadalix River surrounded by natural pools and majestic willows, junipers, poplars, poplars, alders and rose bushes.

From San Agustín del Guadalix, we began a route where the intense colors of early spring were accentuated by the rain, which despite the photos, respected us for much of the route. The historic town of San Agustin del Guadalix, was a land of Iberians, Romans, Visigoths and was under Arab rule for nearly two centuries (877-1084), will be Alfonso VI who after fierce struggles reconquered and repopulated the area. It will pass into the hands of the Mendoza family, already mentioned on many occasions, but it will not be until the 16th century when Juana la Loca will grant them the title of villa. It also suffered the vicissitudes of the War of Independence, when Napoleon’s army set fire to it. It is therefore a place full of anecdotes, curiosities and history.

Hervidero waterfall

But, as in any script, you have to start at the beginning: where to put the starting line of the route of the Hervidero and the aqueducts of San Agustín del Guadalix? If you ask a local, he will tell you without hesitation that in «laguna de los patos» (the duck lagoon). For foreigners, you can get there by taking the exit at kilometer 36 of the A-1 and heading towards the northern industrial area of the town. You will pass a traffic circle with a sculpture of a locomotive and, shortly after, after crossing the bridge over the Guadalix River, on the left, there is a parking area next to a children’s playground.

After crossing the wooden bridge, turn left, leaving another playground on the right, with an abandoned factory full of graffiti in the background. The path, which could well be the set of a film by Daniel Calparsoro or Fernando León, takes you under the road, parallel to the river.

These stairs lead to a kind of river beach in front of which is, flirtatious and imposing, with its two large waterfalls, one of the best waterfalls in the Community of Madrid, which borders the municipality of Pedrezuela. It can be seen from below, but if you want to see it from above, there are several paths to the left and right that can lead you to a good photo. Ideal place to rest this Charco del Hervidero, as well as to regain strength eating a sandwich or the delicacies chosen for the route.

The green pond

On the way back, take an abandoned road to the left of the river that goes up to Almenara de los Castillejos. From there, descend the evocative Vereda del Carril de las Mentiras and two aqueducts emerge in the distance. The first one is La Sima and has eight semicircular arches over a segmental one. The second, La Retuerta, has seven, also semicircular, rising over a large lower arch. Both date from 1854, are made of stone ashlars and are part of the primitive route of the Canal. «They are no longer in use, they were made to save the ravine,» explains the environmentalist. And again in the Laguna de los Patos, concludes an excursion that is very worthwhile.
