Cantabria is a small community, however, if you want to organize an excursion to El Soplao you should know that it is 1 hour drive from Santander and half an hour from the town of San Vicente de la Barquera.
I still remember the first time I visited El Soplao, shortly after it opened in 2005. A cave that was sold as the new wonder of Cantabria, but of which we had heard little or nothing until almost that time.
One of the things that surprised me the most was to learn that the whole area was extensively mined. It was precisely as a result of this activity that the cave was discovered in 1908. But the curious thing is that although some pieces were deteriorated by the continuous coming and going of miners, almost all of them are preserved intact.
The duration of the visit is 55 minutes, during which some of the most important galleries of this cave are visited. The first few meters are worth mentioning because the entrance to the cave is made in a mining train that helps you to get into situation.

Only for the most adventurous! Thanks to the visit of Turismo Aventura you can discover all the secrets of the cave «El Soplao», the diversity of its formations and the variety of its spaces. This guided geological/speleological route has a duration of 2 hours and a half in which you will visit the less accessible areas of the cave, as well as the galleries of Campamento, El Bosque and El Órgano.
Inside the geological formation there are some of the caves that reflect the profuse mining activity that uncovered the cave during the 20th century. You can visit the Galería de los Fantasmas, the Galería de la Coliflor, the Galería Gorda, the Galería del Falso Suelo, the Campamento, the Bosque and the Galería Génesis. It is considered one of the great wonders of geology, as it treasures a veritable paradise of eccentrics, stalactites, stalagmites, lava flows, columns, cave pearls, dogtooths, etc.
Tickets for the cave can be purchased both at the physical ticket office and through the web. We recommend buying tickets in advance to save money and avoid queues. In addition, there are many discounts at Taquilla.com, stay tuned because you can find in our portal offers for a limited time.
Wikipedia
It was discovered in the early twentieth century due to the exploitation of a mine, inside the cave we can see the remains of this mine, as well as cavities made by the miners in the work of the exploitation of this.
But the most beautiful thing is not to visit the mine and close your eyes and think that many miners worked and died where you step, the most beautiful thing is undoubtedly the natural paradise created only with water and calcium carbonate.
The entrance is the same as the normal visit, but before going into details, let’s talk about the dressing room: they provide you with water boots, a disposable overalls, a miner’s helmet with light and a battery so that you don’t run out of light.
Arriving at the room of «The GHOSTS» we start walking on uneven terrain, to begin with we have to turn on the lights and go down some stairs that lead to an area where you see little limestone, compared to what you see later.
In this gallery we all sit on the floor and turn off the lights and we are silent, and in this silence we hear from time to time as a drop of water falls, which is what is causing the limestone.
