vinuesa soria
La Fuentona de Muriel is a beautiful enclave located in the province of Soria, near the Natural Park of the Glacial Cirques of Urbión. A lagoon of clean and crystalline waters that was created by the source of the river Abión.
The community of Castilla y León has numerous natural spaces, and one of them is La Fuentona de Muriel. Considered a natural monument, it is located between Cabrejas del Pinar and Muriel de la Fuente, in the province of Soria.
In this impressive corner of Soria, the Abión river is born. Its magical waters flow through a karstic set of ravines and gorges populated with beautiful forests of junipers, poplars, willows and black pines. The porosity and solubility of this mineral, when exposed to water, gives rise to a beautiful lagoon, known as La Fuentona de Muriel. Although, it is also called by the significant name of Ojo de Mar. Ojo de Mar is the name given to bodies of water (lagoons) that are connected to a larger body of water (sea, ocean) through conduits or openings.

Before reaching the village of Muriel de la Fuente a detour to the left led us to the Casa del Parque del Sabinar, which is located in the old Palace of Santa Coloma. Here you will find all the information you need to visit, both the Fuentona, as everything related to the Sierra de Cabrejas, routes through the area, flora, fauna, ecosystems, as well as its cultural and human values.
Here we learn that the Fuentona is also called «Ojo de Mar», and that this true whim of nature, surrounded by ravines, gullies and limestone moors, is the birthplace of the river Abión.
From the Casa del Parque we head towards Muriel de la Fuente and after passing the bridge over the river Abión, we find on the right a parking lot where we leave the car. It is a paid parking (4 euros), and the proceeds go to the maintenance of the natural space. From here the path is pedestrian.
Once you have covered the first kilometer, you arrive at a shelter with a slate roof and a small temple. It is an information point of the Natural Monument, although when we went there it was closed.
